How to Withdraw Your Child From School in Alaska

Do you want to withdraw your child so you can homeschool?

Create your FREE Withdrawal Letter and mail it to your child’s school.

This form is only for current students of Alaska public and private schools. If your child has never been enrolled in an Alaska school, you do not need to use this form. Create one withdrawal letter for EACH child that has been enrolled in school.

  1. Preview the form below and gather the information needed for each child’s school. It is a standard form letter that begins with the Parents’ names and address, followed by the Name of the School, Attention: Principal’s Name; Address; Date.
  2. Download the form. Complete the form being sure to save your changes if you are not going to print right away.
  3. Print and send your letter via certified mail to the school before you begin to homeschool.

Should you sign a withdrawal form created by your school?

Oftentimes, a school may also ask families to sign their own form that asks for additional information. It may contain basic information, questions about the return of school property (books and/or tech), outstanding lunch fees, etc. Most school-created forms contain basic administrative questions and are not problematic. If you are presented with a form that contains questions that require more than basic administrative information, contact us or HSLDA immediately.

Registration With the State is NOT Required

Families are often told that they are required to either enroll with a district homeschool program or register their homeschool with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development or with their local public school district. These are not true

There is no registration process for homeschools in Alaska operating under AS 14.30.010(b)(12).

The Department of Education and Early Development does give homeschool families the OPTION to file as an exempt private school and report student enrollment. The decision to file and to report enrollment to the state is up to each family and should be carefully weighed based on your specific situation. We are not attorneys and can not advise you whether you should or shouldn’t report. We recommend contacting HSLDA if you have any legal questions.

Congratulations on your decision to take your children’s education into your own hands! Alaska Private and Home Educators Association (APHEA) will be here to support you in this journey every step of the way.
